Luanda — The Ministry of Education (MED) has produced and made available at least 48.8 million primary and preschool textbooks for free distribution during the 2022/2023 school term, said the secretary of Luanda. State for Preschool and Primary Education, Pacheco Francisco, said.
Pacheco Francisco, who was speaking to Angolan Public Television (TPA) during the 2022/2023 school term, said the textbooks began to be distributed in October 2021, adding that the conditions had been created for the opening of schools.
Regarding the illegal sale of textbooks, the MED official said that the case will be solved by the police, as the sale of these items constitutes a crime.
The start of the 2022/2023 school year is scheduled for September 5, with the entry of 2 million new pupils into preschool and primary education.
For the current school year, a total of 10 million additional students are expected to be enrolled in the general education system, which includes preschool, primary and secondary education.
Since 2017, Angola has built more than 650 new schools as part of the implementation of the Integrated Program of Intervention in Municipalities (PIIM).
During the same period, 45,000 new teachers and 7,000 cleaners were recruited.
The education sector currently has approximately 210,674 teachers.
