St. LUCIA: The Ministry of Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology and Skills Training has advised that all schools remain closed today due to inclement weather.

According to the 6 p.m. weather report for September 26, 2022, issued by the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services, the weather will remain mostly cloudy with scattered showers, some of which may be heavy, and isolated thunderstorms. Winds were blowing between the east at nearly 15 mph or 24 km/h, with gusts near showers.

The weather service advised motorists and residents of prone areas to watch for flooding and landslides.

The department also shared a forecast for the Lesser Antilles – Partial clouds, accompanied at times by scattered showers. Showers were heavy in some places, with thunderstorms in the Windward Islands and southern areas. However, the tropical weather remained wet and unstable conditions, which were associated with the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).

A broad area of ​​low pressure over the central tropical Atlantic moved slowly in a north-northwesterly direction raising the strong chance of a tropical cyclone forming within the next five days. As of 5 p.m. (Monday), the center of Hurricane Ian was located near longitude 83.2 west and latitude 20.3 north, about 155 miles (250 kilometers) southeast of the western tip from Cuba. TS Ian is moving west-northwest at 13 mph or 20 kph. Maximum sustained winds increased to nearly 100 mph or 155 km/h, with stronger gusts. Rapid strengthening is expected over the next day or so, and Ian is expected to become a major hurricane tonight or early Tuesday. Hurricane and tropical storm warnings and watches are in effect for the Florida Keys and the west coast of Florida, as well as western Cuba.
